Equivalent human age

29 human years

A dog age calculator converts your dog's birth date into its age in years and months, and into an equivalent human age. Dogs age faster than humans, especially early on: the first dog year is often compared to about 15 human years, the second to about 9 more, and each year after that to about 5 human years (dogs typically age a bit faster in middle and senior years than cats). This tool helps you understand your dog's life stage and care needs.

How dog age is converted to human years

The calculator uses a common formula: the first year of a dog's life is roughly equal to 15 human years, the second year adds about 9 human years (24 total), and each additional dog year adds about 5 human years. So a 5-year-old dog is approximately 39 in "human years" (compared to about 36 for a cat of the same age, since dogs tend to age a bit faster in middle age).

This is an approximation. Breed, size, health, and lifestyle can affect how a dog ages; the result is for general reference only.

Tips for using the dog age calculator

Quick tips:

  • Use your dog's actual or approximate birth date. If you don't know it, your vet may estimate age from a check-up.
  • Leave "Calculate age as of" empty to see your dog's current age and human equivalent.
  • Use the human equivalent to gauge life stage (puppy, adult, senior) and tailor feeding and vet visits.

Frequently asked questions about dog age

How is dog age converted to human years?▼
This calculator uses: the first dog year ≈ 15 human years, the second ≈ 9 more (24 total), and each year after ≈ 5 human years. So a 3-year-old dog is about 29 in human years, and a 10-year-old dog is about 64. Dogs often age a bit faster than cats in middle and senior years, so we use 5 (not 4) per extra year. This is only an approximation; breed and size also matter.
Why does the first year count as 15 human years?▼
Dogs mature quickly in their first year (reaching sexual maturity and near-adult size). The second year still adds development, so it's often counted as +9. After that, we use about 5 human years per dog year—slightly more than the 4 often used for cats—because dogs tend to age a bit faster in middle and senior life.
Is the human equivalent the same for all dogs?▼
No. Breed, size, health, and lifestyle can affect how a dog ages. Larger breeds often age faster than smaller ones. The calculator gives a general reference; your vet can give advice tailored to your dog.
Can I use this for a dog born in the future?▼
You can enter any birth date and "as of" date. For a future birth date, the "as of" date must be on or after the birth date to get a result.
